Why Applied History?
Applied History responds to two urgent problems:
- American Society struggles with a persistent case of historical amnesia. Even when the interpretation of history lodges at the center of public disputes, the amnesia persists, placing the disputes beyond the reach of productive discussion and resolution.
- Emerging scholars enter a discouraging job market and face a stark scarcity of academic positions.
In these troubled times, complacency kills curiosity, enterprise, hope, and humor; indeed, historians can cite many examples where complacency has actually proven fatal. Historians who refuse the temptation to complacency can create a habitat where curiosity, enterprise, hope, and humor thrive. These risk-takers are forever asking themselves—and others—the key questions of Applied History: *How did our present dilemmas and conflicts come into being? *And how could knowledge of those origins contribute to resolving those dilemmas and conflicts?
